On November 7th 2023, the kick-off event for the symposium series of the Sustainability by Design (SBYD) transfer project took place at the Folkwang Campus Welterbe Zollverein. »SBYD Session #1 - Space for Dialogue« is the first of several formats that will be initiated and implemented until the end of 2027 as part of the funding project. The aim of the project is to transfer knowledge from sustainability research to society and the economy through design.

The Centre for Sustainability by Design develops and implements issues and transfer projects: These include the formats Artist / Designer in Residence, a sustainability consultancy for small and medium-sized enterprises, workshop series, exhibitions, international symposia and initiatives for founders.

The project is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Joint Science Conference (GWK) from the »Innovative Hochschule« ('Innovative University') funding line. With the Wuppertal Institute and Fraunhofer UMSICHT, the Folkwang University of the Arts has two strong regional co-operation partners from the field of sustainability research at its side.

The project was initiated by professors and staff from the Industrial Design department. The overall project management lies with Prof. Dr. Johanna Schmeer, the operational project management with Daniel Wilkens and Judith Schanz and the laboratory management with Prof. Dr. Johanna Schmeer, Prof. Stefan Neudecker, and Prof. Anke Bernotat.

Am 07. November fand am Folkwang Campus Welterbe Zollverein die Auftaktveranstaltung zur Symposiumsreihe des Transferprojekts Sustainability by Design (SBYD) statt. Die „SBYD Session #1 – Space for Dialogue“ ist das erste von mehreren Formaten, die bis Ende 2027 im Rahmen des Förderprojekts initiiert und umgesetzt werden. Ziel des Projekts ist es, Wissen aus der Nachhaltigkeitsforschung durch Design in die Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft zu transferieren.

Im Center for Sustainability by Design werden Fragestellungen und Transfervorhaben entwickelt und umgesetzt: Dazu gehören die Formate Artist / Designer in Residence, eine Nachhaltigkeitsberatung für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen, Workshopreihen, Ausstellungen, internationale Symposien und eine Existenzgründungsinitiative.

Das Projekt wird aus der Förderlinie »Innovative Hochschule« vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und der Gemeinsamen Wissenschaftskonferenz (GWK) gefördert. Mit dem Wuppertal Institut und dem Fraunhofer UMSICHT stehen der Folkwang Universität der Künste zwei starke regionale Kooperationspartner aus der Nachhaltigkeitsforschung zur Seite.

Das Projekt wurde von Professor:innen und Mitarbeiter:innen der Fachgruppe Industrial Design initiiert. Die Gesamtprojektleitung liegt bei Prof. Dr. Johanna Schmeer, die operative Projektleitung bei Daniel Wilkens und Judith Schanz und die Laborleitung bei Prof. Dr. Johanna Schmeer, Prof. Stefan Neudecker sowie Prof. Anke Bernotat.
