Folkwang University of the Arts is one of the few art colleges in Germany that has the right to award doctorates and confers the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) in the Department of Design. Doctoral subjects are those subjects that are represented in the department by professors with academic responsibilities. In the Department of Design, these are currently:

Prof. Dr. Cordula Meier Art and Design Studies
Prof. Dr. Steffen Siegel Theory and History of Photography
Prof. Dr. Christa Liedtke Design for Sustainability & Circularity
In addition to purely theoretical doctoral projects, the Industrial Design program also welcomes those that use practical work as a basis for the development of theory. In addition to monographic doctoral studies, the current doctoral regulations also allow for publication-based (cumulative) doctoral studies.
