Social Design

As social designers, we focus on designing products, services, and interventions that place people and societal challenges at the center of their development. We call this approach to design: participatory design. People are not merely end consumers or users of a product, but are involved in the design process as co-developers on an equal footing, making decisions and thus becoming indispensable in the innovative development process. We teach students from all design disciplines participatory design methods. These enable designers and co-developers to find a common language and facilitate successful and, above all, sustainable collaboration. Our students work primarily outside the university in real-life settings. Depending on the project, these include dementia care facilities, hospitals, neighborhoods, daycare centers, and many more.
